MONROVIA, May 29 (LINA) - Governance Commission Chairman Dr. Amos C. Sawyer has called on government to empower women in the country to enable them reach their full potential.
According to Dr. Sawyer, women constitute around 50 percent of the country’s population, and as such, the society is deprived of 50 percent of its strength if it works without women and girls.
He made the call recently when he served as special studio guest on the Liberia Broadcasting System’s Super Morning Show.
Dr. Sawyer noted that women are important because they have always been in the vanguard of pushing the country forward, adding: “without them we will fall flat on our faces.”
He said the country should not forget in anyway, whether productivity or democracy, the role of women in the national agenda, indicating that “they are the ones who have always kept us going.”
He said his institution will, in line with its mandate, continue to formulate policy recommendations and implementation strategies that would advance the quality of governance which will be in the best interest of ordinary Liberians, especially women and girls.
He said in order to achieve this goal the Governance Commission will work with the relevant government ministries and agencies as well as the private sector and civil society organizations.
