No Plans to Abolish Poro, Sande Societies -Says GOL
In the wake of media reports that the Government of Liberia harbors “secret plans” to abolish traditional schools (Poro and Sande) in the country, the Government has strongly denied such reports. Honorable Lewis G. Brown, II, Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, made the clarification at the regular press briefing of the Ministry.
According to Minister Brown, “what is true is that the Government has approached traditional leaders to consider shifting the timing of the conduct of these traditional schools, used by many tribes over many years to prepare boys and girls to become better men and women.” The requested shift is to avoid conflict and interference with formal school periods.
