MONROVIA, June 16 (LINA) – Nyuan Panton Community Chairlady, Madam Musu Jowel, has called on residents to adhere to the recent directive from the Health Ministry asking them to avoid direct contact with relatives of six persons who died of Ebola in the area.

Jowel’s remarks come amidst agitation from family members of the dead victims claiming that their relatives did not die of the deadly disease, but from a curse they believe to be family oriented.

According to the Chairlady, the assertion that what is happening within the family is a curse should not be taken seriously, as some of those who have died are not related to the family; citing the nurse who died at Redemption as a result of treating one of the victims as a classical example.

In an exclusive interview with the Liberia News Agency at her residence in Nyuan Panton, New Kru Town Monday, Jowel called on inhabitants of the Borough of New Kru Town not to take seriously such statements, but follow strict instructions from authorities of the Health Ministry which diagnoses and pronounces victims of Ebola.

She also used the occasion to call on the family of victims to remain calm and give the Ministry of Health the chance to carry out its statutory duty by spraying the entire family house in the community and to also burn the mattresses and clothes of the victims, which according to her, they have resisted vehemently.

When contacted, a member of the family who refused to be named said the family was not prepared to comment on the matter.

The Ministry of Health on Saturday confirmed the death of six patients who died from the deadly disease Ebola in the Borough of New Kru Town, Bushrod Island.

According to the Ministry’s report, four of the cases were confirmed as Ebola by laboratory tests, one of which was an index case of a woman who travelled from Kailahun in Sierra Leone where she contracted the disease and settled in Nyuan Panton, where she got sick and later died.
