FACTS ON RIVER CESS

BACKGROUND

What is today River Cess County went through historical transformations, beginning with the transactions of commercial activities with Portuguese traders in the 1490s. Cestos, the administrative capital of the county, got its name from the Portuguese word, “River of Basket”. Portuguese traders who visited that coastal part of West Africa saw crawfish baskets in Nii-buien, the largest river in River Cess, and renamed it Cestos.
